How Chargeable Weight is Determined in International Freight

Carriers allocate space on airplanes and container vessels based on both volume (space occupied) and deadweight (fuel and structural limits). Consequently, the transport industry employs the Chargeable Weight rule: freight is billed according to whichever is larger between the actual physical scale weight and the calculated volumetric (dimensional) weight.

Air Cargo Volumetric Formula (IATA Standard)

For commercial air freight, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) specifies:

Volumetric Weight (kg) = [Length(cm) × Width(cm) × Height(cm)] ÷ 6,000

Corresponds to a density factor of 166.67 kg per cubic meter (1 CBM).

Express Courier Formula (DHL, FedEx, UPS)

Integrated express parcel networks utilize a denser 5,000 divisor:

Courier Volumetric Weight (kg) = [Length(cm) × Width(cm) × Height(cm)] ÷ 5,000
